Thought you might enjoy this guys..went to a place called Wentworth with a few friends..steeped in history..it has one of the few remaining Bear Pits in the UK....apparently although baiting was abolished in the 19th century, there are recollections of Bears being their within living memory... I'm sure a few of you may of been here.
The Stable Block..
The dogs would of been kenneld here..the sizes varied as would of the dogs..but two of my Bulldogs fitted quite nicely..lol
They were then led through the gardens..to the pit entrance..
Passed various dog statues and numerous water troughs..is it me or is there a strong likeness to Bulldogs..
Then too the entrance...
The dogs would then be walked through this corridor..to the Pit..
A circular room..about 15 feet accross..it has a vaulted ceiling..
The bears would of been released from here..two large type holding areas in the Pit walls..
And above, the viewing gallery..only about standing room for four people..
Kath it was a top day out.. ;D...even if you nearly got knocked half unconscious by a tree.. ;D I would highly recommend it for a visit..well worth it I think..there is a farm there too to keep the kids busy..
