we have a Canon, with a few different lenses
TBH depending on who you ask they all seem happy whether they bought the Nikon or Canon As we have had the Canon a few years and taken( if i say so myself) some beautiful pics i would def recommend it I should add that we have taken this camera to many a field day etc,if some crappy weather cpndition and yet it has always produced the goods. So if you go for the Canon i doubt you could be disappointed I think we spent about £650, 4/5 years ago but think you can still get a goodun for about the same price

Shakka is right if you get the 55-200mm lens makes a big differance in the quality of the image.Great for zooming in on those longer shots.

Yes its all about the lens - there are some good package deals with an extra lens about you want a wide angled zoom i have a good 70mm- 200mm macro tamron lens that is great cheep and cheerful but nice and quick to catch running shots. But i love the canon 18- 250mm its superb.
Bev you do have some great photography you should get some of your best stuff up! ;-)
