the nikon 3000d basically the new d60 with a few new features with a lens will do you if your new to slr photography. Darel has the 3000d but with a standard lens 18-55mm you can get the 55-200mm lens on ebay for £140 delivered or the 18-200mm lens for £500 i.m.o the £140 lens will do you fine. the camera body is about £230 (ebay)-350 with the standard lens 18-55mm included. I would not spend £800 you really dont need it. If you have that much to spend i would go with either canon or nikon £350 body with standard lens and add a 55-200mm lens to it. around £500 total
This is a good link to compare cams and i used it to choose darels camera.
TBH depending on who you ask they all seem happy whether they bought the Nikon or Canon As we have had the Canon a few years and taken( if i say so myself) some beautiful pics i would def recommend it I should add that we have taken this camera to many a field day etc,if some crappy weather cpndition and yet it has always produced the goods. So if you go for the Canon i doubt you could be disappointed I think we spent about £650, 4/5 years ago but think you can still get a goodun for about the same price
Yes its all about the lens - there are some good package deals with an extra lens about you want a wide angled zoom i have a good 70mm- 200mm macro tamron lens that is great cheep and cheerful but nice and quick to catch running shots. But i love the canon 18- 250mm its superb.
Bev you do have some great photography you should get some of your best stuff up! ;-)
