BRITAIN'S UNWANTED PETS - PANORAMA BBC One, Monday 2nd August, 8.30 pm
Last year saw a big increase in the numbers of stray dogs recorded as being picked up in the UK. Tom Heap discovers that many of the unwanted dogs in pounds and rescues are Staffordshire Bull Terrier types – and asks why so many of them are being let go and destroyed. Has the fashion for aggressive looking ‘status’ dogs contributed to the numbers of abandoned pets the authorities are now having to deal with? Panorama has gained access to one of the most famous animal rescues in the world, Battersea Dogs Home, and reveals the shocking truth of the numbers of dogs it is having to put to sleep.

I watched the programme last night and I got very annoyed >:(at the way they decided which dogs to put down and the way they identified breed/type - Not a job I would do but they did not have a clue, perfectly sound dogs chosen to be put down because of the way they look !!!
Depending on whats in the new governments laws we could see the problem get even worse before it gets better when dog ownership, rightly, becomes more onerous.
Hopefully the documentary will have highlighted the issues and got the message across to the law makers

As annoying as it is they have to select dogs for culling in some way, any excuse to put a dog down will be used, not because they want to put the dogs down but because there are just too many to rehome and there isn't the money to look after them all for life.
Don't blame the rescue centres, blame the breeders.

just to many dogs being bred and not that many long term homes for the poor little buggers to go to. i would say that a good % of the dogs are from homes that have not looked in to the up keep and responsibility of the dog and have been out and got the dog of the 1st so could breeder that has just bred to get there money back for there own out lay of there own dog or just to make money. until this type of breeder is stamped out it is just going to get worse but that ant ever going to happen as the KC the vets are all making money from these types. my self i think if some one wont's a dog they should pass some sort of test and be made responsible for that dog for the rest of its life and if you wont to bred form a dog you should be made to go on some sort of breeders and breeding tests and all the stock that is bred from should be health tested and temperament test for the pet homes. but this is never going to happen

You couldn't do it and nobody would buy the pups.

People who are after a quality well bred dog would....and if all good breeders did the same they wouldnt have no choice if they wanted a pup. Thats the whole point they wouldnt want the dog enough then would they...so there for all messers would be eliminated and only real owners would be left. Its not the perfect solution but something must be done we cant go on like this...or none of us will have the breeds we love. i think that you are right they mite just stamp them all out if some think ant done and that will be one sad day

Not an easy problem to sort and I am not a big fan of government control who can and can't own or breed dogs or what type of dog you can own but unfortunately things are out of hand and something does need to be done.
I would licence dog breeders and bring in a dog ownership test. I would also have a dog licence with some of the fee going towards dog welfare and rescue. If all dogs are chipped with both breeders and owners details some form of responsibility could remain with the breeder if the dog ends up in rescue or trouble, which would make some breeders think about what dogs they breed and who they sell them to. Health tests before breeding would be good. Unfortunately I just can't see it happening.

Also i think there needs to be a written test to show you have the competence and understanding to breed, It will prove that you understand about health and temperament, care and medical knowledge to handle things if there are problems. I think that every dog should have two microchips; one for the owner, and one for the breeder. That way the dog will always be the breeders responsibility if they don't home the pup well enough and it ends in a rescue etc its should be standard procedure that if you breed you HAVE to take a pup back if needed.
