I had conformation tonight that I'm going to be allowed to run Sonny in a bikejoring event this November. All I have to do is have him assessed on the day to ensure that he's not a danger to any of the other Dogs. If that goes well, (which it should) then we'll be taking on the Huskies at what they do best and hopefully not disgracing ourselves. I'm crapping myself a bit now.

Owen i have been meaning to mention this to you, you read my mind!!
I have been looking at getting into the canix - x country running with dogs - Its similar i think to your bike thing just running? I wanted some tips on the left and right training!?
I have been running with Rosa on a harness and line but that's it. I have chosen Rosa to do it with - for obvious reasons....
The boys are a no go too interested in the ladies or having a scrap or there is Poppy?! she only has one speed... and i don't want to attached to her when she see a rabbit! LOL
Its on hold at the mo as i have 3 trapped nerves and slipped disks in my back but hopefully up and running again soon.
Any tips in the mean time for training would be great :-)

Wow, you won't get me doing that, I don't do running!
Firstly good choice with the Dog...I'm finding out to my cost that doing this with a male Dog can be a right pain because of the constant marking. Sonny has claimed every bush along the River Lee as his now and the constant stopping is a real pain. I'm hoping he'll be a bit more focused in competition. I think Rosa will be perfect for it.
As for the left and right thing I'm still learning myself but the key seems to be to give them plenty of advanced warning of a turn by saying the command early and saying it when turning too. It's more difficult when you don't have a trained Dog that they can learn off but you just have to repeating it until they learn. I personally use 'gee and haw' pronounced 'jee' and 'whore' lol mostly because I like shouting whore at him...Gee means right and haw means left.
There's also woah! (self explanitory), hike...means hike, you can use it to get them going from a stand still and repeat it to get her going (use as an encouragement word) 'walk on' means to go straight at a junction and 'on by' means to ignore something and carry on.
For competition you'll need to shout 'trail' if you're catching someone so they can move over, stop and let you by.
You obviously don't need all of them and the turns are most important and difficult but they're handy to remember so that you give consistent and precise commands.
If you fancy competing in November let me know, there is a Cani-x part to the competition too.

I used to run at school but only just started again... was all good until in did my back in! I think I'm getting old Owen! LOL
Thanks for the tips they are great, to be honest Rosa is as good as gold. It was harder getting her to run in front and pull, she likes to run to heel. She is good encouragement and makes me more motivated.
I have seen you can do it with two dogs - I am tempted to get some of those wheelie trainers and tie myself to Poppy and Silky ;-)
If i get my back sorted i will be on for November.

I am sure he will do fine, all you have to do is convince him he is actually a Husky not a Bull Terrier. Have you thought of getting him his own igloo or feeding him frozen reindeer ?

To be honest you don't want her to pull if you're doing cani-x, especially if you've got a bad back, she'll put you off your stride and end up doing your back in again. All her really want her to do is keep pace and stay out of your way. If you get really competitive you could do with a bit of help up the hills and you might want to train her to 'hike' when you come to a hill. Just make sure you have a good comfortable belt and that the lead is positioned in front of you, you don't want her pulling to be twisting your hips or pulling you sideways.

I'm not sure what he thinks he is with all the stuff I do with him. He had a Rabbit the other night too so he might think he's a Lurcher ;D.

It's being held in Brandon Park which is Suffolk/Norfolk borders, a bit of a journey for me but not too bad.
I'll get my uncle to do some pics as he's coming with me, he's thinking of having a go with his German Wire Haired Pointer...he's had a few of them and they're friggin machines.
